No Show. I was in San Francisco today for a consulting gig, so I took the opportunity to stop by Moscone Center and check out the Web 2001 Conference and Expo. What a shock.
A year ago, even after the April 14, 2000 crash, if you ran a "web" conference at Moscone, it would be packed with both exhibitors and attendees. But not this year. I walked in at 5pm on the first day. Just about the time that people in SOMA might show up after work. The lobby was empty. No one--literally no one--in the registration line.
So I went downstairs to the exhibit hall. Excuse me. The exhibits aren't in the exhibit hall at all. The entire show is in one of the Moscone Center's meeting rooms. Probably no more than 40 exhibitors, and the largest booth is the one that supports the other exhibitors. (e.g., Sign up for next year's show!)
Perhaps to attract people, they were serving free hot dogs, pretzels and beer. What can I say...even the hot dogs were small.
