Made-Up. (Mill Valley Film Festival) Here we have an often-hilarious sophisticated fake documentary film-within-a-film that, as my wife said, is a litle too complex for its own good. It's a family affair directed by Tony Shaloub, starring Shaloub, his wife, Brooke Adams and her sister (and screenwriter) Lynne Adams. (The script is based on a long-running one-woman play.) Shaloub is the best of the cast, but has the smallest of the three top roles. By the end of the film, I thought Lynne Adams was great. Brooke Adams is ostensibly lead, but is the weakest of the three. Excellent in comedy, her character frequently turns preachy when the script says it's time to hit us over the head with the message. Again, I think my wife had the right idea: If they cut ten minutes of the most theatrical dialogue (the repetitious message about feminine age versus beauty), the film would be a bit on the short side, but the producers would have a better chance of picking up distribution. Still, if you get a chance to see it. Even as-is, it's a lot of fun.
