Spellbound.. (Mill Valley Film Festival) No, not a remake of Hitchkock's 1945 classic, but a new documentary by Jeff Blitz about the phenomenon of American spelling bees. Boring, you say? Far from it. Blitz folowed eight kids in the 10-14 year-old range as they prepared for their regional bees and advanced to the nationals in Washington, D.C. But the film isn't about spelling. It's about these kids and their fascinatingly different families. And what a range! From the daughter of a non-English speaking Mexicant immigrant in Texas, to a girl from an upper-crust Connecticut family, you often can't guess at which attitude comes from which family. You'll be amazed at both the differences and similarities in the way people approach spelling bees and life. This is a great film I expect we'll see sometime next year on PBS here in the U.S. Look for it.

Lessig on Lessig. If you have any interest in law, intellectual property or the current state of affairs in the entertainment or publishing industries, you've got to read Larry Lessig's own account of his oral srgument before the U.S. Suprement Court last week in Eldred v. Ashcroft.
