Web Hosting Strategies

Analysis and review of the web hosting and managed services industry by Doug Kaye.

How to Survive Web Host Failure. Stephen Spencer, managing director of Net Concepts, a web design and hosting company with offices in Browns Bay on the North Shore and Madison, Wisconsin, relates how one US-based cosmetics company was stung when its web host went bankrupt last year. He says you should own your source code, control your domain name and choose an alternative web-hosting company before you need one. Source: The New Zealand Herald

The Realities of Outsourcing. "Gartner has estimated that 80% of major outsourcing deals fail to achieve their original business objectives and are terminated or significantly restructured before the contract period ends." Jeff Kaplan continues, "outsourcers make money by automating IT functions and delivering generic solutions that can produce operating efficiencies and reasonable margins. This doesn't leave room for the continuous changes in many enterprise organizations." As I often say (particularly with regard to ASPs), these outsourcers take on the 80% that's easy, and leave you with the 20% that's difficult. Source: NetworkWorld Fusion
