Blogarithms

Doug Kaye's thoughts on web services, web hosting and managed services.

Solar. Scott Loftesness has been thinking about investment opportunities in solar energy. Here's the current weekly output graph from the 2.5kW photovoltaic system on the roof of my house.

We installed it just a few weeks ago, along with a time-of-use meter. The results are that we sell electricity to PG&E at $0.32/kWh during the day, and buy it back from them in the evening at only $0.11/kWh. You can't imagine how great it feels to actually see the meter run backwards during the daytime. California rebates and tax credits paid for more than 50% of the system. I expect it will pay for itself in 5-6 years, and that's if the rates don't go up. (What's the chance of that?) You can see the complete graphs here. Due to the kludginess of what it takes to get the data to the web, don't be surprised to see dropouts (no power) or flat-lines (unchanging output) from time to time. The power system is more reliable than the methods I use to get the data to the web. :-)
