The Crime of Father Amaro. (El Crimen del Padre Amaro at the 2002 Mill Valley Film Festival) Wow, the Mexican cinema sure has come a long way in the past few years. This is a great film with a superb cast and excellent production (cinematography, editing, sound). It's a scathing attack on the hypocrisy of the Catholic church, in the form of a romantic comic-drama (if there can be such a thing). You may recognize the young star, Gael Garcia Bernal, from his roles in previous Mexican films, Y Tu Mamá También and Amores Perros. This is his best role of the three. I've heard that the film became the highest-grossing Mexican-produced film in Mexico in only four weeks. Funny, sad, scary and well-paced.
