Merci Docteur Rey. (Mill Valley Film Festival) On one hand, this is one of those "kitchen sink" films that suffers from lack of focus and inconsistent style. Imagine in one film: a murder mystery, an opera diva with a gay son (and a father he's never met), and a neurotic voiceover actress who literally bores her therapist to death. On the other hand, there are moments of comic brilliance, particularly a spectacular performance by Jane Birkin as Penelope or Linda. (You'll have to see it to understand.) In fact, she shows up the rest of the film. Dianne Wiest just mugs her way through the half English, half French dialogue. Vanessa Redgrave and Jerry Hall get billings, but their roles are tiny cameos. Good but inappropriately selected songs. See this one for a few good supporting performances, but only if you're willing to overlook the flaws.
