Too Much Time On Their Hands? I couldn't go to Web Hosting Magazine's Web Hosting Expo this week in Washington, D.C.
The Web site hosting industry was badly burned by the dot-com flameout, but the nearly 2,000 professionals gathered in a D.C. hotel yesterday for the Web Hosting Expo did not dwell on the past. [Source: Washington Post]
I would have made it, but I no longer have an employer to pay my airfare to such events. But Ellen McCarthy of the Washington Post is there, and she filed this story in today's online edition.
I hope we get to hear a lot more about the conference. In particular, I hope Web Hosting Magazine will publish the recordings as downloadable MP3 files. This is what Stardust.com does for its events, and I love it.
Ellen reports further:
Last year, companies paid approximately $10 billion to Web hosting firms to manage their Internet presence, according to Joel Yaffe, an analyst with Giga Information Group Inc., but a large source of the Web hosting industry's early growth -- venture-capital-fueled dot-coms -- has dried up.
In our 1995 business plan for the now-defunct CoSite (web-hosting service) business plan, we projected that web hosting would be a $4 billion industry by 2001. The venture capital community didn't believe us.
