Web Hosting Strategies

Analysis and review of the web hosting and managed services industry by Doug Kaye.

Talk to My Agent. The buzz machine is working for CanXCentral, to whom I'm an advisor. "The firm conducts technology audits of the telecommunications, Internet infrastructure and colocation costs of various suppliers on behalf of its clients. It then recommends the best supplier or identifies ways of reducing the costs of an agreement. This is done free of charge to the client, however. Borrowing from a model commonly used in the real estate, insurance and mortgage industries, CanXCentral makes its money through a commission fee paid by the supplier."

SAN vs. NAS: Don't Get Hustled. Jim Seymour over at Ziff Davis has always been one of my favorite pragmatists, and in this column he cuts through some of the SAN hype. (Many years ago, Jim's advice helped me buy laptops: Start with the smallest and cheapest, and work your way up until you find one you can tolerate. I still buy 'em that way.)

Microsoft IIS: Safe Enough? Last year's Code Red and Nimda worms hurt Microsoft's prestige and raised questions about the company's ability to conquer the security flaws plaguing its Web server and e-mail software, but users shunned expert advice urging them to stop using the Internet server software. For 90% of organizations, the cost of switching was way too high. There are two problems—ignorance and inertia. Once you have a certain path, it's really tough to change everything, but if you truly know your boundaries, switching is pretty academic. I don't know too many installations that can't be switched.
