Doug Kaye's thoughts on web services, web hosting and managed services.

Outsourcing Resource. If you're thinking of outsourcing your web-hosting or managed services, take a look at The Outsourcing Journal. There's a lot of free information there, and some of it's valuable, but you do have to pick through it to find the good stuff.
I bought a copy of the book they're pushing Turning Lead Into Gold: The Demystification of Outsourcing) to read during research on my web-hosting book. While somewhat interesting, I found it to be like so many other books and whitepapers on the topic: general and philosophical rather than hard-hitting and specific. (As you'll see when you can buy a copy of my new book, I rant on SLAs.) Maybe that's because the author is the founder, president and CEO of Everest Group, and he's using the book and the on-line journal as a tease to attract consulting business. Hey--that's okay. I do the same with my books and web site. But why write in generatlities and then expect people to pay thousands of dollars a day to get the greater value of specifics. Give people something they can bite into, and they'll come back for more. Put some bait on the hook.
But as I said, there's some real value on their web site. And it's free after all, although you have to give your name, address, email and phone# to download any whitepapers. For instance, take a look at Ten Key Questions for Developing Effective Service Level Agreements. A good intro to outsourcing, even if it doesn't go too far past the "I knew that" level.

BEA Gets Edgy. The edge-side include (ESI) movement gained some momemtum last week when BEA announced support for ESI and the Java-based custom tag library for ESI (JESI). [Source: Web Host Directory]
I like ESI. It's practical and simple. Unfortunately, I think it carries some political baggage because of its origins in the Akamai world. That makes it hard for the competing Inktomi camp to accept. But ATG, BEA, Digital Island, IBM, Interwoven, Oracle, and Vignette have already signed on to support it.
