Doug Kaye's thoughts on web services, web hosting and managed services.

Data Center Glut Continues. The vacancy rate for completed data centers remains at 38.2%. The highest asking rent on completed facilities fell to $42 a square foot in Q3 from $55 in Q2, and rents are expected to continue to decline. The exception is data center space in the New York metropolitan area. A 200,000-square-foot facility owned by Exodus, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, is now one of the company's most valuable assets. Outsourcing Tips. Peter Bendor-Samuel says, "Outsourcing success is the product of enlightened governance. The five rules for successful governance are:

  1. Don't let the former process owners manage the relationship.
  2. Reward the governance team on supplier success, not failure.
  3. Assemble a governance team with good business judgment but no direct process skills.
  4. Give governance the importance it deserves in your corporate hierarchy.
  5. Be tough but fair."
