Thanks. Uncle Dave (how can that be?...he's younger than I am) has graced us with a sincere and humble Web Thanksgiving note. I can't keep track of as much as Dave does (I think his entire life exists in outline form), but I'd like to thank a few people in blogspace.
First, Dave himself. Not only has he almost single-handedly carried the weblog torch, he also was the catalyst that made me realize the potential of weblogs in business. Lunch with Dave got me out of the rut of trying to write an entire book about diaries and journals, and opened my eyes to something I could feel much more personally. Oh, and although they're quirky and very Dave-centric (that's a compliment--really), thanks to him and the rest of his team for Userland's brilliant products (Frontier, Manila and Radio) that have been an absolute pleasure to use.
A special thanks to Scott Loftesness for introducing me to weblogs (although I ignored him for a year) and for introducting me to Dave. And thanks for advice and help over the past seven years or so.
Also regarding my book on weblogs, I'd like to thank the authors of The Cluetrain Manifesto, Rick Levine, Chris Locke, Doc Searls, and David Weinberger. Okay, so maybe I'm the last person on the planet to read it. (Hey...I was busy with all that dot-com stuff for the past five years!) What I've learned (and am still learning) from Cluetrain is honesty. All those things that I did and said--as a CEO and CTO--that I never believed but convinced myself I did. All that jargon and the buzzwords. And even trying to write a book on weblogs that I couldn't relate to on a personal level. Gone. I keep catching myself slipping back into those ways, but thanks to Rick, Chris, Doc and David, I'm finding the voice I've suppressed for those 25 years that I played the game. Thanks, guys. It feels good to be myself once again.
