Doug Kaye's thoughts on web services, web hosting and managed services.

The Future of MSPs. MSPs "still must face a number of distinct challenges. As business customers are becoming more accustomed to receiving services through the xSP model, they will increasingly seek fewer providers with which to work." IDC forecasts the MSP market to increase to more than $1 billion by 2005, from the $172 million earned in 2000. [Source: CIO ASP Advisor Newsletter]

The Book! At long last, I have a copy of my book--'Strategies for Web Hosting and Managed Services'--in my own hands. Even with all of the production/layout errors (I didn't get to see the proofs early enough to have them fixed), it feels great.

For those of you who contributed in one fashion or another, thanks so very much. In addition to my 'corporate' web site, I've created a discussion forum in support of the book. No traffic yet; I just launched it.

Again, thank you!

Cheap High-Speed Bandwidth. No wonder the telcos and CDNs are in such trouble. Bandwidth Market, Ltd. (bandwidthmarket.com) announced yesterday sales of high speed Internet access at $99 per megabit per second per month. The prices are available in the largest US cities for users at the 100 Mbps and higher speeds. [Source: The Web Host Industry Review]. Only $9,900/month for a 100mbps link to the Internet. DS3 (45mbps) for only $6,750/month. Not too long ago you could spend $2,000/month for a mere T1.

TLC for SLAs. In this case, TLC stands for trust level control. In an article, Trust Level Control: Showing Customers Some TLC, Dave Roberts (a marketing guy from Inkra Networks) says, "SLAs don't deliver today because providers can't consistently meet them, so hosting providers must look at new data center equipment that solves the problem as a basis of building TLC." [Source: The Web Host Industry Review] Also: See the chapter on SLAs in my new book. You can get it from Barnes and Noble now!
